It’s the end of the tourist season at Les Cimes, a small ski resort in the Swiss-Alps. Vacationers are leaving, the snow is melting, and a woman’s body is found lying in broad daylight. Her bizarrely staged, ritualized murder is clearly the work of a serial killer working both sides of the Franco-Swiss border. Actor Marina Hands, of the Comédie-Française, and Sofiane Zermani (A.K.A. French-Algerian rap artist Fianso) lead a talented cast in the emotionally complex, continually surprising detective series Off Season. As two police captains — one Swiss, the other French — they join forces to investigate the macabre crime. But the unconditional love of one mother, willing to do whatever it takes to protect her sole remaining child, throws a monkey wrench into their investigation.
Born in Switzerland, prolific director Pierre Monnard studied film in England. His short films, Swapped and Come Closer, toured the globe earning more than 20 international prizes, including a Swiss Academy Award for Best Short and a Boards nomination for film of the year. Since 2013 he has directed several feature films and documentaries including multi-awarded feature Platzspitzbaby (2020). Off Season, is the fourth series directed by Monnard, after Anomalia (2016), the acclaimed Wilder (2017-2020) and Neumatt (2021).
Co-showrunner Sarah Farkas has served as writer on various TV series, including Tomorrow is Ours (2017), Munch (2018), and Nina (2017-18). Claire Kanny was a writer on the series Si près de chez vous (2013), Dernier recours (2013), Robin Hood: Mischief in Sherwood (2014), Petits secrets en famille (2016-17), Petits secrets entre voisins (2013-17), Tomorrow Is Ours (2017-19), and Ici Tout commence (2021-22), as well as on the TV movie Tomorrow Is Ours: The Trap (2019). Marine Flores-Ruimi was a writer on the series Le juge est une femme (2016), Contact (2017), Clem (2018), Tomorrow Is Ours (2017-18), and Seven & Me (2018). Off Season is presented, in its North American Premiere, as part of the festival’s Film Noir Program, just weeks after its European release.
