Synopsis

Malik, a twenty-something African drug mule, is instantly busted and tossed into a brutal French prison where both loyalties and tensions run deep. A babe in the woods and in need of protection, he soon becomes a pawn in the sleazy dealings of fellow inmate and influential Marseille real estate developer Massoud Djebbari. A retelling of Jacques Audiard’s 2009 Oscar-nominated masterpiece of the same name, the series is more of an adaptation than a remake, rerouting many of the film’s story lines, and infusing its rich narrative with a literary and philosophical dimension that’s on par with its dynamic performances and mise-en-scène.

Creator bios

Italian writer/director Enrico Maria Artale made his feature film debut with Il terzo tempo (2013), which won the Pasinetti Award in Venice. His autobiographical documentary Saro (2016) premiered at the Torino Film Festival, and El Paraiso (2023) also bowed in Venice, winning the Orizzonti Best Screenplay Award. He has also directed several episodes of the Italian series Romulus (2020-2022) and Django (2023).

Show runners Abdel Raouf Dafri and Nicolas Peufaillit were the original screenwriters of Jacques Audiard’s feature A Prophet (2009), which earned them a Best Original Screenplay César Award. Dafri was also a writer on Jean-François Richet’s powerful multi-award-winning two-part feature Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1 and Mesrine: Killer Instinct (both 2008), and made his directorial debut with The Brietner Commando (2019). Peufaillit’s numerous other writing credits include the hit A&E series The Returned (2012-2015) and the Netflix miniseries Dealer (2021). A Prophet premiered at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival.
