Synopsis

After the astonishing victory of Free French Forces in the Battle of Bir Hakim, the tides have turned. Now de Gaulle must unify the splintered Resistance and focus on diplomacy. Yet, once again sidelined by the Allies, the General finds himself confronting a new adversary — the President of the United States! The second installment of Antonin Baudry‘s sweeping two-part epic is chock-a-block with gritty battle scenes. But this is a very different telling of WWII, where the real conflicts play out behind the scenes. Roosevelt is insisting upon a Europe with redrawn borders and an occupational government. Yet the ever-headstrong de Gaulle will not budge from his unshakeable allegiance to a free and sovereign France.

Director’s bio

After studying engineering, literature and cinema, Antonin Baudry became an advisor to Minister Dominique de Villepin at the Ministry of the Interior in 2004. From 2010 to 2014, he was cultural counsellor at the French Embassies in Washington, D.C. and Madrid. Drawing on his diplomatic experience, he collaborated with Christophe Blain on the award-winning graphic novel series Quai d’Orsay, which he, Blain and director Bertrand Tavernier adapted for Tavernier’s feature film The French Minister (2013), which nabbed the Best Screenplay award in San Sebastián. His first feature film, the submarine thriller The Wolf’s Call (2019) was nominated for three César Awards, including Best First Film. De Gaulle – Part 2: Liberty is presented as a US Premiere at TAFFF 2026, following a special presentation of the first part De Gaulle – Part 1: Resistance, which premiered Out of Competition, at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
