Synopsis

Dr. Khoury and her dedicated team struggle to keep a women’s medical center afloat on their shoestring budget. Demand is far too high, especially when it comes to protecting women endangered by domestic abuse or suffering from genital mutilation. Then government auditors arrive, threatening the center’s very existence. Based on the true story of Dr. Ghada Hatem-Gantzer and her Maison des Femmes, in the Paris Suburb of Saint-Denis, the film reveals the daily struggles of a small team of doctors, nurses, counsellors, and police officers, which has now inspired the creation of 30+ similar centers in France.

Director’s bio

After training at the Institut national de l’audiovisuel (INA), France’s audiovisual archives, co-writer/director Mélisa Godet became head of development at Alain Attal’s production company, Les Productions du Trésor, and served as a producer’s assistant on Guillaume Canet’s Blood Ties (2013). She was a co-writer of Douglas Attal’s How I Became a Superhero (2020) and Cédric Ido’s The Gravity (2022). In 2023, she wrote and directed all eight episodes of the series LT-21. A Place for Her, Godet’s first feature, premiered at the Marrakesh Film Festival, and won the Audience Award at this year’s Glasgow Film Festival.
