Synopsis

Mihai and Lisbet leave Romania and move their five children to an idyllic fjord in Norway. Evangelical Christians, they’re very strict parents — no cell phones, no video games. When their daughter is seen with a bruise on her shoulder, the liberal community begins to wonder if their parenting style is even more severe. Director Cristian Mungiu trains his sharp, critical eye on our extremist, polarized world and asks if our eagerness to judge one another stands in the way of our basic humanity. The exquisitely restrained performances of the film’s starry leads add even further complexity to this year’s prickly Cannes Palme d’Or winner.

Director’s bio

Romanian writer/producer/director Cristian Mungiu began his career as a teacher and journalist, before enrolling in the I.L. Caragiale National University of Theatre and Film in Bucharest, and has gone on to become a darling of Cannes. He made a half dozen shorts before his first feature, Occident (2002) and episodes in two Eastern European omnibus films, Lost and Found (2005) and Tales from the Golden Age (2009). However, his breakout film was his second feature, the powerful 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 Days (2007), which nabbed the Palme d’Or in Cannes and a plethora of other prizes worldwide. His next film, Beyond the Hills (2012), won the Cannes Best Screenplay award, and Graduation (2016) won the Cannes Best Director award. That was followed by R.M.N. (2022). Fjord earned Mungiu his second Cannes Palme d’Or, making him one of only ten filmmakers in history to have been twice honored with the industry’s most prestigious artistic accolade. It has also been selected as Romania’s official Best International Feature entry for next year’s Academy Awards.
