Synopsis
Living in Spain, Jeanne is a bit of a boozer, madly in love with Daniel, and a little over-attached to her godson. When the boy goes missing, the police suspect Jeanne of foul play, and she flees to her native France. However, taking cover in the cloistered community she grew up in is a leap from the frying pan into the fire. Guillaume Canet‘s bleak thriller plunges us into the most gruesome aspects of fire-and-brimstone religious sects and abuse of every persuasion, while coaxing exquisite — if harrowing — performances from both Marion Cotillard, for whom he wrote the script, and an outstanding Denis Ménochet at his most chilling.
Director’s bio
Born into a family of horse breeders and a member of the junior division of the French National Equestrian Team, the young Guillaume Canet dreamed of a life in the saddle. However, a riding accident at the age of 18 changed all that. He turned to acting, studying at the Cours Florent, and went on to an illustrious career, first in theater, then appearing in close to 90 films. He won the Best Actor award at the Festival Saint-Jean-de-Luz for his performance in Barracuda in 1997, and the Prix Jean Gabin in 2000. Yet he was writing and directing shorts as early as 1996. His first feature, Mon idole (COLCOA 2003), in which he also starred, earned him double César nominations: for Best Actor and Best First Film. His second feature, the masterful thriller Tell No One (COLCOA 2007), nabbed 13 awards in total, including two César Awards: for Best Director and a Best Actor nod for François Cluzet. He has written and directed nine features to date, six of them starring Marion Cotillard, his former longtime partner in life. His other titles include Little White Lies (2010), Blood Ties (2013), Rock’n’Roll (2017), Little White Lies 2 (2019), Lui (2021), and Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom (2023). Karma premiered Out of Competition — and to a six-minute standing ovation — in the Official Selection of this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
