Synopsis
Antony Cordier‘s satirical black comedy The Party’s Over is a battle of the classes that takes no sides and pulls no punches, skewering both the haves and have-nots with equal delight. It all begins when Mehdi, a working-class kid who’s just graduated from law school, is invited to vacation with his girlfriend’s wealthy parents in the south of France. When her arrogant father (Laurent Lafitte, also seen in this year’s TAFFF program in The Richest Woman in the World) offends their proletariat live-in caretaker, tensions spiral out of control between the two families. And Mehdi suddenly finds himself in the role of negotiator… with the film’s superb cast relishing every farcical moment along the way.
Director’s biography
Fascinated by the notion of social class from the get-go, director Antony Cordier dedicated his first film, the documentary Beau comme un camion (2000), about the evolution of the working class, to his own working-class family. His first narrative feature, Cold Showers (2005), exploring the sexualization of class relationships, débuted in the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, nabbed the Prix Louis Delluc, and the film’s lead, Johan Libéreau, won the Most Promising Actor César Award. His Four Lovers (2010) premiered in Competition at the Venice Film Festival. That was followed by Gaspard at the Wedding (2017), all 24 episodes of the comedy TV series UFOs (2021-2022) and three episodes of Irrésistible (2023). The Party’s Over, Cordier’s fourth feature, premiered in this year’s Cannes Directors’ Fortnight.
