Set in 1942 during the German occupation of France, the film follows two very different French civilians—a good-natured house painter (Bourvil) and a hot-tempered orchestra conductor (Louis de Funès)—who end up helping RAF airmen whose bomber has been shot down over Paris. Together they attempt a chaotic and hilarious journey across occupied France to reach safety. The film, co-written and directed by master of comedy Gérard Oury, was the first major French comedy about the Occupation period. It became an enormous box-office hit in France, holding the record for most admissions for over 40 years until 2008. The pairing of Bourvil’s gentle humor with Louis de Funès’ explosive comic style is considered legendary in French cinema.
