Each year, the French police open more than 800 murder investigations.  Close to 20% of them remain unsolved.  This is one of them.  Captain Yohan Vibès, the investigator in charge of the case in Dominik Moll‘s finely-tuned, piercing detective story, tells us that, “Sooner or later, every investigator comes across a crime that haunts him.” It devours him from within.  For Yohan, it’s the murder of a young woman named Clara Royer, which transpired on the night of the 12th, outside of Grenoble, against the looming backdrop of the French Alps.  Actors Bastien Bouillon and Bouli Lanners lead a strong cast, and a homicide team that leaves no stone unturned.  More profoundly, the astute film ponders gender issues in this “man’s world” of crime and punishment, where men commit crimes and men investigate crimes — often crimes committed against women… whose lives are often dissected and vilified, nonetheless.  In his most introspective moments, the taciturn Yohan even begins to see his suspects in himself.  As promised, the case presents more questions than answers.  And Yohan just keeps going in circles.

German-born French filmmaker Dominik Moll studied filmmaking at City College in New York and the French National Film School (IDHEC). He then worked as an assistant editor, editor and assistant director, with such filmmakers as Marcel Ophuls and Laurent Cantet.  He wrote and directed his first feature, Intimité, in 1994.  His second feature, With a Friend Like Harry… (2000), was screened in competition in Cannes and won numerous César awards, including Best Director and Best Actor for Sergi Lopez.  Lemming (2005) opened the Cannes Film Festival.  That was followed by The Monk (2011); News From Planet Mars (2016); and Only the Animals (2019), which premiered at the Venice Film Festival, and snagged the Audience Award in Tokyo and the ARRI/OSRAM Award in Berlin.  He has collaborated with longtime co-writer Gilles Marchand on most of his screenplays.
