First-time director Agathe Riedinger expands upon her short film Waiting for Jupiter in this cautionary tale of a teenage girl obsessed with fame and her somewhat tainted vision of “beauty”. Living in a shabby apartment in the South of France with her deadbeat mom and cherished little sister, Liane aspires to become the “French Kim Kardashian.” Her big break comes in the form of an audition for the reality TV show Miracle Island. Being cast is a major longshot, but Liane milks the opportunity for all its worth, calling herself an influencer, chronicling her costly and often excruciating body modifications on Instagram, and poring over comments from her thousands of followers with an almost religious fervor. Yet staving off despair in the social-media culture that is her world can sometimes feel like a heartbreaking exercise.
A graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, Agathe Riedinger has written and directed three short films, Paul Ange Martin (2015); Waiting for Jupiter (2017); and Ève, which was screened as part of the Lab Competition at the 2019 Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival. She has directed several commercials and music videos over the past decade. Wild Diamond, her first feature film, premiered in competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and is presented at TAFFF before its release in France.
