Soldiers plunges us into the daily lives of a platoon of dedicated French soldiers simply trying to do their jobs — against almost impossible odds — in Mali. Lieutenant Anaïs Collet, a highly disciplined officer with an uncompromising moral code, and her unit have been deployed as part of Operation Barkhane, an anti-insurgent military campaign to quell Islamist extremists in Africa’s Sahel region. But tracking down terrorists, bolstering practically nonexistent local governments and simply protecting the lives of innocent villagers turns out to be an extremely complex assignment. The tactical balancing act it requires and the emotional toll it takes on these young men and women pushes them to their very limits. Yet the series offers a touching portrait of their commitment, their inner struggles, and their palpable courage at every turn.
Jean-Philippe Amar, director of all seven episodes of Soldiers, is an accomplished television director of the hit TV series Spiral (10 episodes, 2019-2020), Un village français (23 episodes, 2013-2017), and the documentary series Les Nouveaux explorateurs (4 episodes, 2008-2014). Co-showrunner Thibaut Valetoux wrote the screenplay for the feature film Le Sens de la famille (2017), and has written scripts for various series, including Paris Police 1900 (2018), Totems (2020-2022) and Black Mambas (2021). His co-showrunner Frédéric Krivine has written scripts for numerous shorts, TV movies, mini-series and for the series Une belle histoire (2020). He was previously showrunner on P.J. (94 episodes, 1997-2009) and Un village français (65 episodes, 2009-2017).
